When Collence Chikuni graduated from African Christian College in 2003, he understood that effective ministry is not measured by how much one person can accomplish, but by how others are equipped to continue the work of Christ.
Inspired by the way Jesus invested in His twelve disciples, Collence has made leadership development a central part of his work. Rather than serving alone, he intentionally mentors four men: Shadreck, Mordechai, Thomas, and Titus, whom he has invited to walk alongside him in ministry.
He chose these men because of their passion to serve God and their willingness to learn. Like the first disciples who immediately responded to Jesus’ call (Matthew 4:18-22), they accepted the opportunity wholeheartedly, committing themselves to a journey of growth, service, and discipleship.
Every opportunity to serve becomes an opportunity to train.
As they travel and minister together, the four men receive practical experience in biblical leadership, preaching, teaching, discipleship, counselling, prayer ministry, and community engagement. They are not simply observers or assistants. They are active participants. Under Collence’s guidance, they lead Bible studies, preach sermons, pray with people, and take responsibility for different ministry activities.
“In most of our outreaches, I rarely preach because these guys are able to lead all the church programmes,” Collence says.
Watching these men grow in confidence and spiritual maturity has become one of the greatest joys of his ministry. Each opportunity they receive strengthens not only their abilities but also their commitment to serving Christ faithfully.
Reflecting on his ministry, Collence believes every evangelist can learn from Jesus’ example.
“Jesus chose the twelve disciples so His ministry would continue long after He was gone. His method worked. That is why we still have the gospel today. Not everyone has the opportunity to get formal theological education, but those of us who have can multiply that training by intentionally developing others.”
Collence story reminds us that transformational leadership is not about building a personal ministry. It is about building people. By following Christ’s model of intentional discipleship, he is raising leaders who will one day mentor others, ensuring that the work of the gospel continues for generations to come.
