Education costs money. Usually, these costs are at least partially passed on to students in the form of tuition and other fees. At African Christian College, a combination of student work and scholarships cover all costs for students.
All students work on campus in exchange for tuition fees, meals, and accommodation. This unique and practical solution to fees provides experience and builds student skills while ensuring higher learning is accessible to anyone willing to do the work.
Work for Your Fees
During class weeks, students work 30 hours on campus in our Work-Study program. This work is in exchange for tuition fees, accommodation fees, and cafeteria meals during class weeks.
During breaks from class, students who stay on campus must work at least 15 hours per week in exchange for accommodation and meals. Additional work may be available for students who wish to earn additional money.
Student spouses must also work the same hours.
Student Work Stations
Students are assigned work in various stations around campus. Work tasks are part of the operational activities of the college.
Most students work in our macadamia orchards. Other work stations include the library, gardens, landscaping, market, offices, and cleaning.
Work Prepares You for the Future!
Working while studying is not easy. But in addition to helping pay your fees, you are building your CV and practising important skills applicable to the workplace after graduation.
How is this Possible?
This opportunity is possible because of the entrepreneurial stewardship of the college along with the financial support of like-minded donors who want to make quality, Christian higher learning available for you and others in Africa.
Our costs of providing a quality education are significant — over 120,000 ZAR per student annually. The economic value of each student’s work covers about 10% of these costs. The remaining 90% of costs are generously covered through donor-funded scholarships on behalf of students.
Students receive no cash payment and do not pay tuition, accommodation, or catering fees under the Work-Study programme. Students are expected to pay a one-time enrollment fee of 500 ZAR and cover their own basic needs, travel, and other expenses.
‘I paid my way through college working at Locavore. The education and experience I gained changed my life. I now own a farm school as a resource lab for farming technology in my community.’
