Sox Mtsetfwa’s journey into agriculture began early, working alongside his mother in the fields from the age of six. The act of weeding maize and planting vegetables in small garden plots instilled in him deep satisfaction. The sense of fulfillment he found in the results of his hard work — whether harvesting ripe vegetables for his family or sharing the bounty with neighbors — drove his passion for farming.
In school, agriculture became his favourite subject, and he excelled in it, fueling his decision to pursue a career in the field. After high school and working with a South African landscaping company, Sox studied Horticulture at the University of Eswatini. A few years later, he completed a specialised training programme in macadamia orchard management.
Sox’s career path has been rich with diverse experiences. During his time at university, he worked on a permaculture project to set up a vegetable garden for an orphaned and vulnerable children’s soup kitchen in Mankayane. After completing his studies, he worked as a team leader at the Royal Eswatini Corporation’s Tunzini citrus farm. This role sparked his desire to further pursue farm management. He managed macadamia and avocado production as well as sheep shearing in South Africa and grew to production manager. Most recently, he has been production manager for avocado, macadamia, and banana farms at Canterbury Estates in Eswatini.
The plan is to continue refining the farm’s operations and practices, focusing on improving yields and maintaining sustainable farming practices.

When Sox was introduced to African Christian College’s Tree of Life Project (our macadamia orchards), the opportunity to work in a peaceful, faith-based environment alongside a multinational community was incredibly appealing. The role aligns with his personal values of family, faith, and environmental stewardship. His vision for the project includes improving orchard productivity, promoting better tree and soil health, and helping his team members understand the importance of agriculture. Sox is excited about the opportunity to make a positive impact on the farm’s operations and to lead the team to new heights.

Looking ahead, Sox plans to continue refining the farm’s operations and practices, focusing on improving yields and maintaining sustainable farming practices. His commitment to sustainable farming is evident in his work, particularly in areas like water management, soil health, and reducing chemical use. Sox is dedicated to creating a more resilient and productive farm for the future with the support of his team.
Outside of work, Sox is a family man with two young children he cherishes. He’s passionate about learning and self-improvement, often spending time reading, watching, or interacting with others to gain new knowledge. He also enjoys spending time with his family, playing soccer in his community, or watching games on television.
