Charles Banda, a 2023 graduate of African Christian College , is making a remarkable impact in the church leadership landscape, both in his native Malawi and beyond. Recently, he organized a church leadership conference in Cape Town, where he served as the lead trainer for local pastors and church leaders. This event, commissioned by Mponela Bible School, is a testament to Charles’s commitment to empowering leaders and his ongoing dedication to advancing Christ’s kingdom across Southern Africa.

Now an administrator and lecturer at Mponela Bible School, Charles’s influence extends far beyond the classroom. His role at the Bible school is twofold: he teaches courses on Church Leadership and Church Worship while also guiding the institution’s administrative functions. His passion for educating the next generation of leaders is evident in everything he does. Through his courses, Charles equips his students with essential leadership principles, church governance strategies, and the theology of worship that are vital for effective ministry in today’s complex world.
Reflecting on his work with the church leaders in Cape Town, Charles noted the unique challenges many of them face, especially in a rapidly changing social and cultural landscape. “Many of these leaders are struggling to connect with the younger generation, who are increasingly influenced by secularism and social media,” he observed. “Additionally, the legacy of apartheid and ongoing social inequality have made social justice issues a pressing concern in their communities. Many of these church leaders are finding it challenging to address these issues in a way that resonates with their congregations.”

Charles believes that church leaders need three key tools to overcome these challenges:
- Training and Equipping: Ongoing education in areas like leadership, evangelism, and social justice will help church leaders address the pressing issues they face.
- Intergenerational Collaboration: Building bridges between older and younger generations within the church can help foster understanding and address the changing needs of the community.
- Contextualized Ministry: Leaders must create ministries that are tailored to the unique social, cultural, and economic contexts of their congregations.
His training sessions in Cape Town were specifically designed to address these challenges, offering leaders the tools, strategies, and insights necessary to navigate the complexities of ministry in a post-modern world. Charles emphasized the importance of making the Gospel relevant and meaningful, especially in a world where traditional authority and institutions are increasingly questioned.

“African Christian College played a pivotal role in shaping me into the leader I am today,” Charles reflected. “Theologically, ACC helped me develop a deeper understanding of Scripture and its application in real-world contexts. The college’s emphasis on practical ministry training and community engagement also equipped me with the skills and confidence to effectively serve and train others. I am deeply grateful for the solid foundation ACC provided, which has enabled me to fulfill my calling as a Bible teacher, administrator, and trainer.”
Charles’s work extends beyond the borders of Malawi. As part of his commitment to empowering local church leaders, he regularly organizes training sessions for churches in his community, offering them much-needed support and practical tools to strengthen their ministries. These initiatives have had a far-reaching impact, not only benefiting church leaders but also strengthening the wider community by helping congregations better serve their members.
