Bongani’s Missional Journey in South Africa

We invited Bongani Malinga, a 2021 graduate from Eswatini, to share how God has been working through his missional journey in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and this what he reported:

I have always felt it deep within my veins — the calling to preach and teach the Word of God. Every time I had the opportunity to share a message, I experienced the peace that surpasses all understanding. When I joined African Christian College in 2019, that inner conviction was finally affirmed; my purpose was no longer a mystery.

It was not an easy journey, but it was worth it.

I had to set aside personal ambitions and desires to enroll in the theology program at African Christian College. From day one, I knew I was in the right place, a place where I would grow, be transformed, and be equipped for God’s mission. I worked my way through college, serving in different departments and gaining valuable experience as each day began and ended. Before I knew it, graduation day had come, and it was time to return to the field to do the work of my Master.

About a month later, I found myself in Jozini, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. What began as a simple invitation quickly turned into a mission field. I was given the opportunity to lead a local church in the community. From that day on, I knew God had directed my steps. Though I entered a different cultural and social setting, I was ready, equipped with church planting and evangelism skills that proved vital for ministry in a foreign land.

One of my greatest challenges was the lack of financial support. The church could not provide for my needs; in fact, many members needed help themselves as they lived in poverty and vulnerability. Thankfully, my time working on campus had prepared me for such a situation.

During my studies, I worked in the landscaping department where I learned brush cutting and grounds maintenance. I decided to use those skills as my “tent making” ministry. I bought my own brush cutter and began offering lawn and yard maintenance services from one homestead to another. This small business sustained me and allowed me to support church members who were in need.

The education and spiritual formation I received at African Christian College continue to bear fruit, not only in my life but also in the lives of many in Jozini.

Bongani Malinga, 2021 Graduate.

Even as I worked, I continued to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified for the salvation of all people. God was clearly at work in the lives of the people of Jozini. The church began to grow, and many witnessed the movement of the Holy Spirit in the community. We reached out, preached, baptized, and discipled new believers. The journey toward Christlikeness is always refreshing and renewing, even in the midst of life’s struggles.

Today, our ministry continues to grow. We are not yet where we want to be, but God has been faithful. We still gather to worship under a tree, but His presence fills our meetings. God has blessed us with dedicated people who have a heart for service, and we have begun building our first church structure. I am thankful to contribute to this project through my grass cutting business. Although it is seasonal and requires careful saving for the winter months, God continues to provide.

Without a doubt, my missional journey in South Africa has been filled with transformation and faith. I trust God now more than ever, for I have seen His hand guide me beside still waters. The education and spiritual formation I received at African Christian College continue to bear fruit, not only in my life but also in the lives of many in Jozini.

I pray that God will continue to bless the college so that more men and women may be equipped for excellent service in the Kingdom of God.
