After completing secondary school in 2019, I applied to many colleges. African Christian College was the only affordable option. My parents were distraught about me leaving Zambia for my studies. Because I had heard great things about the college from its alumni, my friends, and on social media, I convinced them to let me go to Eswatini in January 2020.
As the only student from Zambia, communicating with people from different countries was a challenge. It was hard to communicate in English, but I coped with the environment over time. The diverse community taught me a lot. I’ve become much more understanding of different cultures and beliefs and avoid being judgmental.
I remember being asked to preach for the first time on Sunday for the Campus Church of Christ. I didn’t have peace of mind for the whole week because I was not good at public speaking. However, many people encouraged me and gave me tips. After preaching, lecturers came to me and offered constructive criticism. I felt loved by the community. Now, I can speak in public without hesitation.
Taking responsibility for my groceries and fees during school was another area of growth. Working for your accommodation and fees is so unique as it teaches us to be responsible. I will take this home with me. The opportunity to learn in and outside of class is exceptional; every day you spend on campus becomes a lesson.
One of the lecturers encouraged me to visit him for Bible study once per week. I was growing spiritually after every session. As a result, I was baptised.
There is kindness among the students and staff. I have learned that helping others is the best way to build up the community. When I didn’t have any, it was so easy for me to ask my friends who had, even from the lecturers.
After all that African Christian College has done for me, I concluded it’s a gift from God!! I appreciate every step the school took to provide me with a better education. When I get home, I will be able to work for my bills, speak in public, teach other people the gospel, and teach others how to live in a community.
