Every year, we welcome students from across Africa. Many of them come with a desire to get an accredited degree and return home. But most leave with more than just a piece of paper . . . they graduate with a call to ministry.
In 2018, a determined young man, now Rev. Amutuhaire Kuruka, arrived from Ibanda, Uganda – the Pearl of Africa. In a few days, everyone on campus knew his name. He was eager to paint his footprints in the hearts of many by impacting their lives for the better. He made many friends and was admired for his winning spirit.
Kuruka was involved in several extracurricular activities. He played soccer and was a devoted member of the school choir. He joined the poetry club and led a music band called Disaster. He coached a campus children’s soccer team, taught Sunday school sessions, and played on the volleyball team. He was energetic and determined to make the most of his college life.
He was exceptionally dedicated to discovering his calling.
Kuruka felt an urge to reach out to children in the neighbouring community of Masundvwini. His leadership classes taught him to start small. With the help of some fellow students, he began by inviting children to campus for weekend soccer matches.
A short Bible study preceded the games and participating and watching became part of the Saturday afternoon life on campus. Kuruka brought energy to the activities. And it grew into a calling.
This grew into Kuruka organising a Children’s Sports Day on campus. It was a success – thanks, in part, to the skills and knowledge he had learned in Project Management and Fund Development courses in his leadership studies. Money was raised, volunteers enlisted, children transported, the gospel preached, and memories created. From that day, Kuruka knew he was called to work with young people.
God shaped him and our campus environment helped him discover and nurture his calling. His passion and joy while engaged in youth ministry confirmed it.
When Kuruka graduated and returned home to Uganda in 2020, he went straight toward his calling. Three days after arriving home, he got a job as Diocesan Youth Conductor for his church. He became responsible to assist children and youth ministry leaders at over 175 churches organise, plan, and implement programs.
Recently, he organised a tournament where thousands of young people from his churches competed in sports, studied the word of God, discovered and nurtured their talents, and created memories . . . just like his days back in Eswatini as a college student.
