Yohane: Becoming a Useful Tool

Yohane Kamtsokwe is my name from the Republic of Malawi in a city located to the southern region of Malawi called Blantyre. I am the first born in a family of four, two boys and two girls, being raised by both parents. As a child, I grew up in the knowledge of God since my father is a pastor in our church.

“It is true that association brings impartation, which brings assimilation, and that there is no way you can be different from those whom you closely associate with” (Reverend Lucy Natasha). I grew up with a passion for computers and so I went to the University Of Malawi Chancellor College after high school. While studying at Chancellor College, I associated myself with people who influenced me into bad behaviors such that I ended up forgetting the Christian values my parents had taught me during my childhood.

At one time, I had an accident with my friends which could have ended our lives . . . but God protected us. After that day, I knew God has a purpose for my life because he saved me from the accident. Some days after the incident, I thought over what could have happened to me if I had died in the accident and where I could have ended up at. That’s how I decided to amend my ways and find things I can do to keep me busy and focused on God’s kingdom.

If I look back into my life, I used to be a broken tool – a worthless object – lost in my sins, loving evil but unloved in return. I, therefore, realized that the unrighteous life I was living was not what God wanted from me and it wasn’t taking me anywhere. I discovered that I didn’t want to be blunt and broken, and this discovery was a whole new beginning for me.

I asked God to fix me, to melt me down, reshape me, and harden me into an invaluable tool that I longed to be. My heart’s desire has always been serving in God’s Kingdom and glorifying his name. It was this aspiration which led me to African Christian College.

I know that African Christian College is God’s way of equipping me to be spiritually strong and I’m not going to waste this opportunity. While I’m here, I am determined to expand my knowledge of God, become more like my Saviour, Jesus Christ, and to serve God with all my life.
