In 2014 I got information about African Christian College and what amazed me was the fact that only 5 percent of African youth access tertiary education. That started boiling inside me. As I contemplated with this information, I noted that ACC is working hard to break that assertion by providing tertiary education to young Christian men and women in Africa. I decided to apply and, as they say, the rest is history.
The first three months were very stressful due to the fact that I knew I will be away from home for a solid three years. Things started changing after meeting people from different countries and I started appreciating how other people approach life. During debates in class on different issues, I could see tensions due to cultural differences but I came to realise that living with people from diverse cultural backgrounds require tolerance.
At the end of my first year I discovered that what I thought I knew was less than a fraction of what I really knew. I decided to major in leadership. My main motive was first to learn how to lead myself, then others. Many leaders fail in their tasks because they always want to lead others while they lack leadership themselves. Being able to lead yourself enables you to effectively lead others as well. I have total confidence in God that the knowledge I acquired here at ACC will help in transforming my community and Africa at large.
Many communities are living in poverty not because they do not have resources but people are lacking knowledge and the eyes to see opportunities. I had a privilege to learn entrepreneurship, microfinance and community development. As part of our entrepreneurship class, we were given a chance to practice the entrepreneurial skills we learned in class. That experience helped to understand what I should expect when I will enter into entrepreneurship. As a result, I feel compelled to engage the youth in my church and my community so that they can be emancipated from poverty through farming and small businesses.
I thank God for helping me to reach this far. It is my prayer that he would continue opening more opportunities for me to implement the knowledge and skills that ACC has equipped me with. Above all I ask God to be the author of everything I intend to do as the Bible says “the earth is the LORD’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1). Everything that I will be doing, I will try to do it for the glory of God.
