When asked which is the greatest commandment in the Law, Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind” (Matt 22:37) Jesus is quoting from a section of the Torah called Sh’ma Yisrael, an important Jewish prayer:
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your house and on your gates. (Deut 6:4-9)
This passage of Scripture urges us to teach and remember God’s Word in all our lives — wherever we are and in whatever we are doing. In the completion of our new library, we also took it literally on campus and invited students, faculty, staff and visitors to write their favorite passages along the steel post frames of the library.
As the library is completed, many will be covered up but they remain within the walls as reminders of God’s promises, blessings, and commands. And they serve as a blessing on a building intended to serve students today and for many, many years into the future.
